Yet soap, cosmetics, candles, hair-care products, cosmetics, and perfumes are the most important groups of exported products from Argentina to USA. Although, in 1999, local producers accounted for about 87.8% of Argentine exports to USA (source Bureau of Census ), Argentina exported to USA about 2.0 million tonnes of partially bleached or unpolished sugar, 2.3 million tonnes of green coffee and 1,481,597 tonnes of palm oil during the 1993-2002 period. Thus, the importance of Argentina’s role in the production of coffee, sugar and other agricultural products to USA is increasing.
When results are compared with imports, it can be seen that Argentina has a surplus of total agricultural products for the USA. Regarding coffee, the country has a surplus of 7.0 million tonnes during the study period. Sugar, despite being a product with a relatively volatile price, is a successful business for the country in the USA. Thus, the main producer of Argentine agrichemicals is now USA, which is a consequence of the country’s trade policy.
Sugar is a significant Argentine export to USA, totalling about 3.9 million tonnes (figure 2). However, as the country has a surplus in sugar sales to USA, exports have decreased of about 100,000 tonnes between 2001 and 2002. Moreover, Argentine sugar exports to USA are dropping to about 2.2 million tonnes in 2002. This decrease is a consequence of the law implemented in the early 2000s that forced the country’s sugar producers to share part of the country’s quotas with the European Union. d2c66b5586
