The New Zealand armoured personnel carriers (APCs) were originally intended to be equipped with the LAV-300, and by the late-1990s, a decision had already been made on the specified APCs. In the 21st century, the main upgrade of the APCs has been the replacement of the original M113/AIFV with the LAV-300 (NZLAV), the LAV-IIIR co-axial tank (NZLAV-capable tank), and the LAV-195 D7 Paladin.[26][citation needed]
So for the first decade, the NZDF remained without APCs. The last of the NZLAVs were retired from service in October 2004. In late 2008, the government announced that it would spend 2.5 million dollars remapping the existing LAVs to deal with some of the fleet's deficiencies. This included repairs to the design of the internal roof, rear vision blocks, hatches and engine intake screen. However, the project was delayed due to the economic recession. In 2010, it was announced that the LAVs would be replaced with a new vehicle, and at that time it was named the LAV-195 or the NZLAV-capable tank. The LAV-195 was also known as the Super NZLAV, or SNZLAV. The LAV-195 has been manufactured by General Dynamics Land Systems Canada in Saint-Jean-Sur-Richelieu, Quebec, Canada.[27][28] d2c66b5586
