It is a three volume book and the first two volumes were published in 1993. The third and final volume was published in 2007 with a preface by the author and was called Hilyat ul-Awliya wa Tabaqat-ul-Asfiya (The Adornment of the Saints and the Ranks of the Spiritual Elite) third volume contains the biographies of about 200 awliya of the first three centuries. Al-Isfahani has compiled the biographies of Awliya of different sects and sufi orders.
In this audio , Shaykh Abu Nuaym discusses his work, comparing it to books of biographies of the great men and women of all times. He also explains the list of awliya compiled in Hilyat al-Awliya wa Tabaqat al-Asfiya. He also explains the intellectual and religious history of the Muslims and the development of the Islamic world from the time of the Prophet Muhammad to the time of Abu Hanifah.
The book is based on the books of hadith (sayings of Muhammad) (not necessarily authentic), authentic letters of awliya, biographies of awliya, accounts of awliya, books of interpretation of hadith (such as al-Tabaqat), interpretations of hadith, books of fatawa, exegesis of hadith, and al-Muhasin. Often, the awliya were given the honorific title of Shaykh, while others had the honorific title of Auliya (elder).
The book is ordered chronologically, beginning with Allah's Messenger, the Sahabah, the Tabi'un, the Tabi'in, the Scholars, and the Imams, in addition to the Awliya, the Auliya, the Imamah, the Tazkira, the Hadith, the Ikhtilafa, the Fiqh, the Tafsir, the Hadith, the Fatawa, the Taswir, the Ikmal, the Musannaf, the Hilya, the Riyasat, the Salaf, the Sarf and the Mu'tazila. The book also includes the history of Islam, the Islamic world, and the Arab world.
