model 49 was one of the first full sized, all steel, injected trigger group frame rifles. Rugers subsequently outsourced the injection of the trigger to them, the action to milsurp/motto/krieger and accessories to other companies and the trigger group to upholstery shop owned by Stanley/Starrett Co. Yet, when you compare the two competing engraver/maker's marks, they are identical. This is Stanley/Starrett first try at selling a quality rifle to the 40's gun market. Later Starrett guns came with their jeweler's engraver mark stamped into the trigger face. The overall feel to the 48 and the 49 is the same. A few slight differences include the 49, again because of the difference in the action receiver to the 48 coming from an elm stock. The 48 has a darker stock wood than the 49.
It's hard to find details on Ithaca Model 49 ages, but if your gun has a serial number it's not among the very earliest (i.e., 1961). The very earliest ones had no serial number and had smooth dark walnut stocks. Later ones had serial numbers on the left side of the receiver, and the wood was gray elm in a lighter color and with pressed checkering. A lot of people want to call these checkered guns "Deluxe," but the true Deluxe had a gold hammer and trigger and, I think, a factory sling. So... darker walnut means earlier, lighter elm means a little later. (The Model 49 was made 1961-1979, although some "expert sources" may disagree a bit on the age.)
The police took responsibility for everything dealing with insurance, hospital bills etc. He was in a pretty bad condition and took a lot of morphine which kept him unconscious and drugged for a few days. It had a disastrous affect on his body though, he was rendered immobile, the brain suffered (amongst other things) and was considered "permanently damaged". Unable to even hold a pencil without agony, he used a pen for a few weeks till I lent him my Manumatic. He wrote some short-stories for another friend and friend-of-a-friend for much of the next two years, taking us to his happy place. His once powerful, muscled, shapely arm/shoulder/legs consist of little more than a shriveled skeleton with only a wisp of scar tissue on his left cheek. d2c66b5586
