The measured skidding load needs to be checked against the longitudinal strength of the section. The load should not exceed the design strengths of the section. Bearings may be justified only if the structural and functional requirements of the bearing are considered. The measured load must be reduced by 30% to take account of the influence of the central bearing area at each end of the beam, and an assessment of the influence of the bearing should be made in the dimensions, design and technical specifications. The BS 5866 6.13 defines the skidding load, you can use BS 5869 to substitute for BS 5866, as it has the same format.
No bearing area reduction was required when the recommended beam for the pavement was specified. It is an optional method and one which should only be used when given as an option in the specification, otherwise a bearing for BS 5780 should be used.
The preferred method for estimating the bearing reduction is to use a safety factor. The minimum safety factor determined by the BS 6572 series is 2.0.
