The Bewerley Poisoning concerning the death of Elizabeth Bewley, a girl who was found in the River Taw on 17 February 1662, at Bewerley, Gloucestershire. The local hue and cry was raised when it was discovered that the girl was pregnant. She was supposed to marry a clergyman named Arthur Mosse, who was gone from home. Henry Charles Hoskyns Clarke, appointed by the Parliament as judge for the High Court of Judicature at Gloucester, whirled it into a judicial duellon between two anti-Royalist lawyers, Simon Eykyn and Richard Dewes, to decide if the girl was pregnant with a male child and if so, how many days had passed since conception; in considering which way the infant would jump out of the uterus. d2c66b5586
