The main menu is straightforward, with the usual chapter stops and chapter marks. There's no chapter menu (nothing like AVC-Intellisense), but chapter marks are provided for all chapters. The chapter menu offers chapter indexing, closed-captions, and the usual chapter menu options, but not subtitles. There's also a button to skip to the next chapter, and a button to rewind. As in AVC-Intellisense the chapters can be rewound through either chapter menu or the next chapter button. The chapter menu offers viewing options for the whole movie or for certain chapters. The chapter menu is very simple and no frills are offered here, but the chapter menu does work very well.

The extras start with a DVD-Video menu consisting of chapter stops, chapter select, and various other navigation options. The menu is clean, though none of the chapter selection options are particularly helpful. The chapter select button goes to the main menu and then to a title menu to select a chapter. I'm not sure why the first option isn't listed in the chapter select tab. There are no chapter stops, but there is a chapter mark (small white dash) at the beginning of every chapter. The chapters are separated by menu screens that provide only a chapter number and take you to the main menu. It's slow going, and I recommend that you load the disc a few times until you're confident you're in the right spot. The menu also includes a little info card, which provides a brief plot summary that uses the obligatory asterisks.

AVCHD is a superb format for the Blu-ray disc, but it's not a format that lends itself to the high quality of HD-DVD. The AVC codec is much more robust, but it doesn't support everything that you'd want to put on a Blu-ray disc, such as the HD-DVD Proxy coding that allows the player to stream a DVD-like experience from an HD-DVD disc to a PC or other device. So, in order to be consistent, the Blu-ray disc also supports AVCHD.
