Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) are a group of plant and animal-derived acids used in a variety of skincare products. These include daily anti-aging products, such as serums, toners, and creams, as well as occasional concentrated treatments via chemical peels.
Yes. These studies (1) compared the effect of AHAs, topically applied in a cream, on the sensitivity of human skin to ultraviolet (UV) radiation with the effect of the same cream containing no AHAs, (2) measured how fast the skin returns to normal after use of the AHA-containing cream is discontinued, and (3) investigated whether AHAs enhance UV-induced damage to DNA in the skin (Kays Kaidbey, Betsy Sutherland, Paula Bennett, Wayne G. Wamer, Curtis Barton, Donna Dennis, and Andrija Kornhauser, Topical glycolic acid enhances photodamage by ultraviolet light, Photodermatology, Photoimmunology and Photomedicine, vol. 19 (2003), issue 1, pages 21-27).

Who Should Use It: Given their wide range of effects, most people can benefit from using AHAs, says Nazarian, so long as you find the right alpha-hydroxy acid and concentration of it for your skin type.
Don't Use With: Avoid using retinoids at the same time of day as AHAs, and be cautious when using both BHAs (beta hydroxy acids, such as salicylic acid) and AHAs in order to minimize irritation.
How often you use alpha-hydroxy acid depends on the particular acid, product, and skin. Follow product directions, but always start slow, using any AHA only once or twice per week and gradually increasing frequency as your skin can tolerate it.
When it comes to choosing between alpha hydroxy acids vs retinol, which is best for your skin Reducing the effects of aging on your skin requires a combination of ingredients including broad spectrum sunscreens, exfoliants (like alpha hydroxy acids or AHAs), antioxidants, emollients, and cell communicating ingredients like retinol. Derived from Vitamin A, ingredients like retinol and prescription only retinoic acid, are widely recommended by skin care professionals for their ability to help reverse sun damage, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, boost collagen production and increase skin cell turnover. While many individuals cannot tolerate tretinoin because it is highly irritating to skin, retinol and retinaldehyde are over the counter alternatives that are effective and better tolerated.
Hi Annika,Your skin is tingling upon application of your alpha hydroxy acids because the product is penetrating the epidermis, or top layer of your skin. This is a normal side-effect and should diminish with continued use. A tingling, burning sensation can also occur when you have sunburn, allergies, a cold or fatigue. If the tingling sensation is bothering you, gently rinse the product off. If you have especially sensitive skin, you may find the aha cream Green Cream Level 3 works well for you without irritating your skin. See our advice on using retinol creams.
Hello Nicole, the best way to use alpha hydroxy acids and retinol is alternately. Both are effective treatments in resurfacing the skin, but together they may cause undue irritation. I should imagine the same to be true of AHAs and Porcelana. I would advise you to use them alternately. If you wish to try layering, proceed with caution: do a patch test first on an inconspicuous area and wait 24 hours for any symptoms to appear. Hope this helps, Sharmani.
For Judy:Both retinoids and alpha hydroxy acids are great as part of your anti-aging skin care routine. We would suggest that they be used on alternating nights in order to minimize any possible irritation. And because both can make you more sun sensitive, daily application of a good, broad spectrum sunscreen like Anthelios is essential.Best, Sharmani
For Ash:Retinoids and vitamin A products should be avoided if you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding. As for alpha hydroxy acids, they are generally considered safe but it would be best to consult with your doctor.Best, Sharmani

Photoaging is the effect on the skin of chronic ultraviolet irradiation superimposed on intrinsic aging. Photoaged skin may be wrinkled and have irregular hyperpigmentation or depigmentation, telangiectasias, actinic keratoses or invasive carcinoma. Over-the-counter topical treatments for photoaging have been used by persons interested in improving the appearance of their skin. Some of these agents have been compounded into cosmetics. Consultants from The Medical Letter on Drugs and Therapeutics reviewed the data on topical tretinoin and alpha-hydroxy acids to determine their effectiveness in improving the appearance of aging skin.
Alpha-hydroxy acids are widely used in cosmetic products. Only one controlled trial has been conducted to date. In this study, more than 70 percent of patients treated with lactic acid or glycolic acid reported improvement in the appearance of photoaged skin compared with 40 percent of patients who did not use lactic acid or glycolic acid. Low concentrations of alpha-hydroxy acids appear to be less irritating than tretinoin, and no adverse effects have been reported, although no long-term studies have been conducted. High-concentration alpha-hydroxy acid peels have been known to cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and have been associated with eruption of herpes simplex lesions.
Consultants from the Medical Letter conclude that the topical application of tretinoin for four to six months can cause modest improvement in photoaged skin and that these improvements may persist, especially with continued use. Data on alpha-hydroxy acids are lacking and, despite widespread use in cosmetic products, their effectiveness in improving photoaged skin has not been established.
α-Hydroxy acids, or alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), are a class of chemical compounds that consist of a carboxylic acid with a hydroxyl group substituent on the adjacent (alpha) carbon. Prominent examples are glycolic acid, lactic acid, mandelic acid and citric acid.
Although these compounds are related to the ordinary carboxylic acids and are therefore weak acids, their chemical structure allows for the formation of an internal hydrogen bond between the hydrogen at the hydroxyl group and one of the oxygen atoms of the carboxylic group. The net effect is an increase in acidity. For example, the pKa of lactic acid is 3.86, while that of the unsubstituted propionic acid is 4.87; a full pKa unit difference means that lactic acid is ten times stronger than propionic acid.[1][2]
Alpha Hydrox Souffle primarily works through the active ingredient, glycolic acid. This alpha hydroxy acid is able to penetrate the skin deeply, to provide more potent exfoliation, and can even cleanse pores.
Based on Dr. Anita Sturnham's belief that good acid treatments should replenish as well as exfoliate, this weekly mask involves two steps: a potent glycolic-steeped exfoliating gel and a creamy hydrating mask to replace the moisture and lipids that acids can strip from the skin. Make it your once-a-week evening treat.
If a multiple-step skincare routine isn't for you, switch your basic moisturiser out in favour of Kate Somerville's active-charged formula every few evenings. From the acclaimed Exfolikate line, this cream contains fruit enzymes as well as glycolic and lactic acids to gradually slough away dull skin cells.
Products need to be made to a pH of about 4 and with a very high concentration of glycolic acid over 10% to work for anti-aging skin problems. As a consumer it is hard to know if a product meets these formulation criteria. My creams and lotions to fight the skin problems of aging and sun damage are formulated to these criteria. Acne and pore cleaning glycolic acid products will work with less stringent criteria.
To make your choices simple I have a Glycolic Acid Facial Skin Care Kit that fits all skin types. It provides your glycolic acid cleanser and oil-free cream in different strengths. The Glycolic Acid Anti-Wrinkle Face Cream is the most important facial glycolic acid product to use and you can just add that to your existing skin care routine. Always start at the lower strength and work up as your skin adjusts. Add one of my zinc oxide sunscreens and you have a powerful anti-aging skin care routine that will transform your complexion and fight the signs of skin aging over the course of your lifetime.
