Yes, very well. But also, not quite. With Apple's 10.0.3 release of Final Cut Pro X, they added multicam support and a host of other features, but more importantly for some, they finally made it possible to move projects from Final Cut Pro 7 to Final Cut Pro X. Well, that's not quite true. Apple didn't actually make this possible - they are promoting the product of a 3rd party, Intelligent Design, to facilitate upgrading old projects. Here's a quick overview of the process:
Intelligent Design, a software company specializing in video editing, has announced the release of a new product called "Pearl". It's a product that claims to be perfect for moving projects from Final Cut Pro 7 to Final Cut Pro X. The old projects are preferably going to be kept, but this is not required, and a complete export to Final Cut Pro X from FCP 7 is not out of the question. And the really cool thing about Pearl, according to its developers, is that it's pretty much plug and play. It will work with any project in FCP 7 that has been recorded in real time or via media capture devices. So, if you've ever had problems making the transition, that's probably the reason - you've recorded a file or a series of files with a media capture device on FCP 7, but when you went to upload to FCP X, you found that the timecodes didn't transfer with it. This is typically caused by a range of different issues, from timestamps being mangled in the fcp7 file conversion to simply not being able to send the file when converting to a new format. Pearl supposedly gets around all of that. The developers say that their software is able to determine what the source media is, all the files are time-coded, regardless of what the source device, and also set the timecode based on the media. The results should be cleaner timestamps that match up when you're done. d2c66b5586
